  2. THE CAPSTONE COLLECTION

  4. GIF GALLERY - VOLUME ONE

  8. Welcome to Gif Gallery Volume One!
  9.  
  10. Gif Gallery contains a collection of 1000 fantastic photographic images
  11. in GIF format. These images are divided into 10 interest groups each
  12. holding 100 images:
  13.  
  14.                 Architecture.
  15.                 Asia mix.
  16.                 Backgrounds (1).
  17.                 Business and Industry.
  18.                 European mix.
  19.                 General mix.
  20.                 London/England.
  21.                 Trees.
  22.                 USA.
  23.                 World mix.
  24.  
  25. Each group is in an appropiatly named sub-directory under \GALLERY. Each
  26. sub-directory has a FILES.BBS file containing a brief description of
  27. each GIF.
  28.  
  29. Navigating around these images has been simplified by the inclusion of
  30. thumb-nail "contact" sheets, five sheets of twenty thumb-nails for each
  31. group. Use these thumb-nails as the "index"; they are found in an
  32. appropiate sub-directory in the \THUMBS sub-directory.

  34. Each of these groups also represents all the images on the corresponding
  35. CAPSTONE COLLECTION PHOTO-CD discs, Volumes 1 to 10. An example Photo-CD
  36. image from each group has been included in the \PHOTOCD subdirectory.

  39. VIEWING THE IMAGES
  40. ------------------
  41. The GIF images are all either 768 x 512 x 256 colours or 512 x 768 x 256
  42. colours depending on thier orientation. The preferred resolution for
  43. viewing landscape orientated images is 800 x 600 x 256 colours. This
  44. resolution is also suitable for the portrait images but a small area
  45. will be off screen; if you've a 17+" monitor and a capable card then a
  46. resolution of 1024 x 768 x 256 colours may be preferable.

  48. The thumb-nails are TARGA files (uncompressed RGB) 640 x 480 x 32,000
  49. colours. They can be displayed satisfactorarily at any resolution with
  50. 256 colours or more.
  51.  
  52. The sample Photo-CD images are in five resolutions, all in 24bit colour
  53. (that's 16 million colours!). It is unlikely that you will have the
  54. hardware to display the top two resolutions, but the next two down will
  55. give spectacular results. Go for the highest number of colours your
  56. display card will show for best effect.
  57.  
  58. Resolutions in Microsoft's Windows are determined by the Windows Setup
  59. program or possibly a utility that came with the display card. If you
  60. are still using a 16 colour driver with no suitable Setup options to
  61. change it, its time to dig out that elusive driver disc that came with
  62. your display card!

  64. In DOS the display resolution will be determined by the viewing software
  65. you are using, read the literature that came with the software. In most
  66. cases you can configure the software for your particular display card,
  67. or alternativly choose VESA support if your display card is VESA
  68. compatible.

  71. VIEWING SOFTWARE
  72. ----------------
  73. Many software packages are available to allow you to view, and in some
  74. cases manipulate, edit and print, GIF, TARGA and Photo-CD images. Use
  75. whatever packages you are accustomed too. However this disk holds two
  76. shareware packages for viewing the images which you may like to try.
  77.  
  78. Both are Microsoft Windows packages by JASC Inc. of
  79. the USA. Image Commander is a first rate viewer with cataloging
  80. capabilities. We can think of no better package for navigating around a
  81. collection of image files, whether for casual viewing of new files or
  82. for viewing and selecting for organised catalogs of images. Hand-in-hand
  83. with Image Commander goes Paint Shop Pro, a package so widely known it
  84. hardly requires introduction. Paint Shop Pro will allow you to
  85. manipulate and adjust an image then save it in a wealth of different
  86. formats. Both packages handle Photo-CD flawlessly.

  88. To install Image Commander, select \WINUTILS\IC\SETUP.EXE on your
  89. CD-drive from the "File", "Run" menu in Windows Program Manager.
  90. Similarily install Paint Shop Pro running the SETUP.EXE program in the
  91. \WINUTILS\PSP sub-directory.

  93. Remember, all three of the above packages are SHAREWARE. If you continue
  94. to use them you MUST register. Doing so ensures that such high standards
  95. in shareware marketed software continues. We thank JASC Inc. and Alchemy
  96. Mindworks Inc. for allowing us to include their software on our discs.

  101. All the images on this disc are provided royalty free provided they are
  102. not used for commercial gain. For publishable quality images and
  103. royalty free use, all the images on this disc are available in Photo-CD
  104. format in Volumes 1 to 10 of the CAPSTONE COLLECTION PHOTO-CD DISCS. The
  105. images are also available as individual 35mm transparencies.
